News update Lightning kills 2 Farmers, hurts 6 in Apayao

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Two young farmers were killed while six others were rushed to the hospital when lightning struck while they were planting rice in Apayao province last Saturday, a police report said.

Charlon Carlos, 26, immediately died as the lightning charred his body, while 16-year-old Melvin Marcos, passed away at the Flora town hospital.

Apayao police director Sr. Supt. Nestor Bergonia said Carlos’ group were planting palay on a rice field in remote Brgy. Malayugan when the lightning struck the wet surface. The incident also left six people injured.

As of this morning, 20-year-old Edmar Marcos is still being treated at the hospital while the five other victims — Felimor Bingayen, 25; Roldan Bingayen, 16; Arnel Bingayen, 14; Alexander Martin, 35; and Richard Lara, 19, were sent home.

Unlike the rest of Northern Luzon, farmers in Flora and other extreme Northern Luzon areas are now on their first planting season, with strong rains ahead of the so-called “wet season” in other parts of Luzon and the rest of the archipelago. - By Artemio Dumlao
