News update Muntinlupa opens 1st water treatment plant

A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is now operational in Muntinlupa to serve thousands of households in the city.

The Putatan Water Treatment Plant in Barangay Putatan is the first water treatment plant in the country to draw water from the Laguna Lake as alternative source to Angat Dam.

Maynilad Water Services, a concessionaire, is operating the plant that currently serves 4,600 households in Muntinlupa. The plant is part of the P1.7 billion pipe-laying project of Maynilad that will provide potable water supply to an initial 22,760 families in the city.

Muntinlupa residents hailed the project as this will be the first time that they will get water supply right in their own homes.

Maynilad explained that the plant "uses microfiltration and reverse osmosis to treat raw water from Laguna Lake" with 20 filtration processes.

It said that by July, the plant can produce 50 million liters of water per day (MLD) and another 50 MLD by September this year.

Households in Muntinlupa, Las Piñas and portions of Cavite will benefit from the additional water supply.

Muntinlupa Mayor Aldrin San Pedro said the city is privileged to have its own water treatment plant facility. "More residents can expect their own water supply this year," he said.

The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Board of Trustees led by Chairman Gabriel Claudio recently visited the plant to check on the facilities.
