MORE than 1,500 people took part in a 1km charity walk yesterday morning to raise awareness and money to help needy school children in Cambodia.
Called Walk The World, the annual event, held at Sengkang Riverside Park, helped to raise more than $60,000 for the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP). Last year, the event, which was held at the F1 race track, raised around $80,000.
The money will be donated to the WFP's School Feeding Programme in Cambodia, providing daily breakfasts for needy school children throughout the year.
Yesterday's event was part of a global initiative that saw thousands of people from over 70 countries, including Australia, the Philippines and Iraq, walking for the same cause.
Walk The World was a local initiative started by international mail and delivery company TNT in 2003, in support of the WFP's School Feeding Programme.
Among yesterday's participants was Mrs Perlisa Yeo, 48, who signed up with her husband and two teenage children. 'It's good for my kids to learn about how they can help underprivileged kids,' she said.
