News Update Manila airport night navigation instrument damaged

MANILA, Philippines – An instrument used to guide planes landing at night at Manila's international airport has been damaged. Several airlines have delayed their flights to arrive in daylight.

Alfonso Cusi, chief of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, said a very high frequency radio transmitter was damaged early Saturday. Evening flights departing from the airport won't be affected because takeoffs rely on different instruments.

He says that a notice has been sent out and some airlines with flights scheduled to arrive Saturday night have delayed their departures so that they would reach Manila during the day on Sunday.

He says that technicians were rushing repairs to the instrument that guides planes approaching in the dark or during bad weather.
