News update PDEA raids Cavite shabu den, asks for cop chief’s head

Anti-drug agents Sunday raided a drug den in Bacoor, Cavite prompting Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency chief Dionisio Santiago to call on the Philippine National Police to relieve the local police chief. In an interview on dzBB radio, Santiago asked the PNP to enforce sanctions against officers who supposedly coddle drug pushers.

"The raided establishment was very near a police station. The commander of that station must be removed immediately. I don't care if that commander is a Philippine Military Academy graduate," he said in Pilipino.

"The PNP chief [Director General Jesus Verzosa] has made big efforts but there are still wayward cops. So many policemen enter the force and make drugs a source of income. I cannot keep quiet on this anymore," Santiago added.

Earlier, dzBB's Manny Vargas reported that anti-drug operatives raided a clandestine methamphetamine hydrochloride laboratory at a house in Bacoor.

The drug, also called shabu, is a popular synthetic form of cocaine.

A village official, identified in the report as Reynaldo Botones, was taken into custody. His role was not clear as of posting time.

PDEA agents found cigarette cartons filled with shabu stored in the house.

The drug trade has been a scourge in the Philippines, that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo named herself the anti-drug czar in 2009.

That same year, the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime report identified the Philippines as a global shabu producer.

In March 2010, the US State Department warned that the narcotics trade in the Philippines could affect the May 10 automated elections because local leaders allegedly receive money from drug lords to fund their campaigns. —VS
